DOCKSIDE DELUSION: 3 THINGS DEALERS GET WRONG ABOUT BUSINESS VALUE

Ask a business systems dealer what his company is worth, and you'll often get an answer based more on hope than reality. Much like boat ownership, perceptions and actual market value can be two very different things.

Misconception "My Revenue Determines My Value"

Many dealers assume that higher revenue automatically means a higher valuation. Not necessarily. Buyers care more about profitability, recurring revenue, customer retention, and operational efficiency than top-line sales.

It's similar to buying a boat. A 40-foot yacht may look impressive at the dock, but if it's expensive to maintain, burns fuel like crazy, and spends most of its time in the repair yard, it's not as valuable as a smaller vessel that's reliable and easy to operate.

Misconception "I've Been in Business for 30 Years, So I'm Worth More"

Longevity is admirable, but age alone doesn't create value. Buyers pay for future cash flow, not past achievements. A dealership with outdated processes, declining accounts, or heavy owner dependence may be less attractive than a younger, faster-growing competitor.

Think of it as a classic boat. Just because it's been floating for decades doesn't mean buyers will pay a premium. Condition, performance, and future usability matter more than the launch date.

Misconception "If I Own It, Someone Will Want to Buy It"

Perhaps the biggest misconception is assuming every business is automatically sellable. Buyers want businesses that can run without the owner at the center of every decision.

Boat owners learn a similar lesson. A custom-built boat designed around one owner's preferences may be perfect for them, but difficult to sell when it's time to move on. The broader the appeal and the smoother the operation, the stronger the market value.

The Bottom Line

The value of your dealership isn't determined by what you've invested, what you hope it's worth, or how long you've owned it. It's determined by what a qualified buyer is willing to pay for the future benefits they'll receive.

Just like a boat, the best time to think about value isn't when you're ready to sell. It's years before, while you still have time to improve the asset.
